Achievements

CIMR started its functions in 1980. It was a time where no facilities were available in Kerala for the training of the intellectually challenged persons. Several misunderstanding were prevailing in the society regarding intellectual disability. It was CIMR that started to work for the intellectually challenged through awareness programmes across Kerala and through various other programmes. The achievements of CIMR are several, a few of them are given below:

1980
Fr. Felix started his special work for the intellectually challenged by establishing Asha Bhavan, the first special school at Changanassery, in Kottayam District
1980
He started All Kerala Association for the Mentally Retarded (AKAMR) in 1980.
1980
Established ‘Ashakendram’, special school for the intellectually challenged, at Kochi in 1980
1980
Established Central Institute on Mental Retardation (CIMR), as the executive wing of AKAMR in 1980
1980
Established Teachers Training Centre at Thiruvananthapuram in 1980
1983
Established Developmental Centre for the Mentally Retarded (DCMR), Special School, at Thiruvananthapuram in 1983.
1991
Established Jeevan Prakash Child Centre (JPCC) at Thiruvananthapuram in 1991.
1992
10 children and staff from CIMR participated in Para-Olympics in Spain in 1992.
1994
Children of CIMR performed 'Ramayanam ballet' in the World Conference on Scientific Study on mental deficiency at Taj Palace, Delhi and thereafter at different places all over India in 1994.
1996
Established Agricultural and Horticultural Rehabilitation farm at Kuttichal in 1996.
1999
Reached out to more than 40,000 families with the intellectually challenged in 23 states of India for community based rehabilitation. All these families were given training, a book titled 'Home a School' in the regional languages and a guide for parents named 'Models and instructions to the Parents and family for Learning and Instruction'. A complete set of teaching materials based on shapes developed by CIMR was also supplied to each family in 1999.
1999
85 children participated in the Republic Day parade in Delhi and won second price for best performance in 1999
1999
Participated in UMANG (a cultural exchange program) in Rajasthan in the year 1999.
2000
CIMR started the first Rural Olympics for the intellectually challenged people and their mothers in the year 2000.
2000
Established 'Freedom Centre', the performing arts center for and by the intellectually challenged people at Kovalam, inaugurated by Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam in 2000.
2002
Children of CIMR conducted 'kalasandhya', a cultural event for the public at Ernakulam and Trivandrum in 2002.
2002
CIMR received certificate for "Excellence in Achievement" by Rehabilitation Council of India in 2002.
2003
The children of CIMR participated in National Youth Festival in four stages and performed at par with the children from formal schools in 2003.
Developed the Three Cs concept (Comprehension, Competence, Creativity). This educational concept developed by Fr. Felix helps the maximum development of the intellectually challenged children by building up in him optimum physical ability, mental ability and natural skills through the stimulation of functional growth.
55 batches of teachers were trained here and are working all over India and abroad.
2007
CIMR introduced horseback riding as a therapeutic method through the benevolent gift of two army horses by former president of India Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam.
2016
CIMR conducted training for the anganwadi workers of Trivandrum district, in 32 batches, training them in early integration of the children with disabilities.
