DCMR special school for the intellectually challenged children was started in 1983 at Jagathy in Trivandrum. Later it has been shifted to its own spacious premises in Murinjapalam, near Medical College, Trivandrum. During the past four decades DCMR has trained over a thousand children with intellectual disabilities.
This has been developed as a model training centre. The Three Cs education concept was evolved at this centre through trial and error method. Model class rooms of Three Cs – Knowing the shapes, Making the shapes, Selecting the shapes and Combining the shapes classes- are arranged at this centre. This has been registered as a special school and a vocational training centre. At present this Centre has over 120 intellectually challenged children undergoing training in various aspects of rehabilitation, including special education using the “Three Cs” concept, mobility, vocational training, arts programme, Sports, music, drama, dance, drawing, Painting, Agriculture, horse back riding, car driving etc. A separate vocational training unit is established here where the children are being trained in tailoring, waste paper and water hyacinth recycling, hand made paper unit, agriculture, computer data entry etc.
