Ashakendram at Cochin was the first special school-cum rehabilitation centre of CIMR started in 1980. This is located in Ernakulam with facilities for special education, vocational training and rehabilitation. From 1980 about 700 children with intellectual disabilities were trained from this centre. Now, this centre is functioning as a vocational training centre for the intellectually challenged adults. At present, there are over 60 intellectually challenged children and 12 staff members. The students are being trained in vocational activities like tailoring, computer entry, spiral binding, phenyl making etc.
